This is my must-have list of books for parents trying to find out more. They are sure to rock your parenting world!
Raising Resilient Children by Robert Brooks and Sam Goldstein.
Sam Goldstein spoke in Melbourne a few years ago and was truly inspirational.
Helping Your Anxious Child by Ron Rapee and others.
These guys run a free ten week CBT program for anxious children and adolescents in Sydney, based at Macquarie University, that has excellent outcomes according to their research.
The What to Do When ….. series. Dawn Huebner has written a great series of workbooks for kids based on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) principles. They include What To Do When You Grumble Too Much for negative kids, What To Do When You Worry Too Much for anxious kids, What to Do When Your Temper Flares (my favourite) for angry kids, What To Do When You Dread Your Bed for kids with sleep problems, What to Do When Bad Habits Take Hold (fairly self-explanatory), and finally What To Do When Your Brain Gets Stuck for kids with OCD.
He’ll Be OK by Celia Lashlie. After a career in the NZ prison system, what else would you write about except adolescent boys?! Lots of reassurance offered for parents whose boys might be going through that feral stage we know and love so well.
